Getting an Account to Contribute

Simply email jpdaigle@softwareengineering.ca and provide the desired username and email address under which to register. An account will be created for you and a password emailed back. This is a human-driven process, see below for an explanation.

The Explanation: Spam Problems

In the beginning, the wiki allowed anonymous edits. This attracted spambots like crazy, even though there's little point, as MediaWiki uses rel=nofollow attributes to prevent search engines from boosting the rank of outgoing links. (Precisely to discourage spamming and gaming.)

So one day we switched the configuration to require user accounts for all editing. Spambots soon gained the ability to create accounts on any stock MediaWiki sites, and the spam problem continued, to the great annoyance of all.

Recently, we've been plagued by spambots so much we've finally had to disable account creation. We hate to impose a barrier like this, and we'll try our best to turnaround account requests as fast as possible.
